Winter weather can be quite destructive and dangerous throwing wind, rain, snow, hail and sleet at us. It is at these times of the year that we need to be vigilant in taking care of not only our cars but our work vehicles.
So how do you take care of your essential forklift trucks when the weather turns nasty?
Daily Checks
Carrying out daily checks are essential if you want to take good care of your vehicle. You need to ensure that the forklift is safe to operate and that any defects you find are reported to those that need to know. This way, any deficiencies are rectified as soon as possible. It’s important to check the following:
- Batteries
- Tyres
- Wipers
- Lights
- Screens
- Horns.
Service History
When was the last time your forklift trucks were given a service? Was it recently? Check to ensure that all service checks have been done recently, and if not, make sure your forklifts are given the service they need. These are preventative measures that could save a life.
Breakdown
If your forklift truck does break down suddenly, then you need to make sure the driver has an emergency number to call should this happen.
Suitable Clothing
If your duties for operating the forklift are outside then it makes sense that your drivers are given suitable clothing for winter weather e.g. gloves, hat, visible jackets.
Lights and Visibility
Make sure that all the lights are working both at the front and back of your vehicle. Wipers should be in full working order and the lights should be free of dirt. Horns should be checked to see that they are working, and all areas where the forklifts are operating should be well lit.
Are all your staff adequately trained?
It is imperative to ensure all staff who operate the forklift truck are adequately trained. There will be reduced risk of accidents if all your operators are trained in how to use their forklift truck. During winter months the roads and ground around where you work can be treacherous, so you need to operate your forklift with great care.
EmergencyParts, Hire Vehicles and Preparation
If you have a break-down, then you need to make sure you have access to a hire truck and the same applies to equipment and machinery. Make sure you have emergency parts and access to a hire firm, so you’re not suddenly stopped in your tracks. Prevention and preparation are everything, so you’re ready should something happen.
